Crossing
paths with Maren Hassinger in New York recently was one of those really fantastic,
unexpected pleasures that once processed, you realize “Damn! How frickin' cool
was that?” Even if you’ve never had the chance to chat with her, maybe you were
fortunate enough to encounter her work in groundbreaking exhibitions Now Dig
This!: Art & Black Los Angeles 1960 – 1980 (2011) and Radical Presence:
Black Performance in Contemporary Art (2012).
Those exhibits, along with a 2014 solo show at the Reginald Ingraham Gallery in Los Angeles, have rightfully placed Hassinger’s interdisciplinary practice
on a map that (finally) includes previously uncharted territory. Aiding that
expansion are Andrea Barnwell Brownlee Ph.D and Anne Collins Smith at the
Spelman College Museum of Fine Art who are organizing Maren
Hassinger...Dreaming, a retrospective exhibit scheduled to open in early 2015.
I personally hope, the show awakens art lovers and enthusiasts to an
accomplished artist who has been slept on for too long.
