On July 26, 2013 the African American Art Alliance of the Milwaukee Art Museum and Ayzha Fine Arts Gallery & Boutique sponsored a reception for artists featured in the Milwaukee Art Museum’s Wisconsin 30 exhibit.

The show focuses on Wisconsin-based artists and runs parallel with the MAM’s hosting of 30 Americans, a travelling exhibition of works by contemporary black artists from the Rubell Family Collection.

Cynthia Henry, the proprietor of Ayzha Fine Arts Gallery where the event was held, beamed like a proud momma when she introduced the artists. BlackArtistNews was present to hear two of them speak: Marlon Banks and Kevin Boatright.

The genial Mr. Banks, read passages of his writings and then shared the backstory of his painting on display, The Guardian of Sleep, the roots of which lied in a childhood memory involving his grandmother.

The somewhat shy Mr. Boatright appeared a bit hesitant, but openly revealed his affinity for the black cultural aesthetics of the 70’s exemplified in the humor of Richard Pryor, the socially conscious music of Curtis Mayfield, and Blaxploitation films such as “The Mack”.

Artists Brad Anthony Bernard and Sherman Pitts also attended the reception.
