TRANSITION: Calvin Hannah (1930 - 2011)

TUSCALOOSA -- June 5, 2011
Longtime Alabama photographer Calvin Hannah has died. He was 81.

Hannah took pictures for The Tuscaloosa News for about 45 years, and he served a long stint as chief photographer before retiring in 1994.

He was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in the mid-1980s but continued working for years.

Hannah briefly attended the University of Alabama but went to work at a photo studio because he needed money.

After joining the Tuscaloosa newspaper, he chronicled the civil rights movement in west Alabama, including the brief enrollment of Autherine Lucy as the first black student at the University of Alabama in 1956.

Hannah is survived by his wife of 56 years, Margaret, and three daughters.
