Moon, Turn the Flames...Gently Gently Away

Awol Erizku’s first solo exhibition at Sean Kelly, Los Angeles presents a powerful new body of work spanning photography, sculpture, and neon. In Moon, Turn the Flames…Gently Gently Away, Erizku deepens his exploration of identity, race, and resistance through a rich visual language rooted in Pan-African symbolism, cultural memory, and abstraction. Highlights include neon reinterpretations of iconic logos, intimate floral photographs infused with political and spiritual meaning, and a poignant photographic series memorializing victims of police violence using cowrie shells and forensic imagery. A third-floor installation reimagines influential hip-hop albums printed on stone, accompanied by a custom mixtape that extends Erizku’s work into sound. Together, these works form a poetic, radical cosmology—one that invites viewers to reflect, resist, and reimagine.
