CBC News spoke with curator David Woods about Hidden Blackness: Edward Mitchell Bannister (1828-1901) , a groundbreaking exhibition featuring the work of 19th-century Black artist Edward Mitchell Bannister. On display at the Owens Art Gallery in Sackville, N.B., from January 28 to April 6, 2025, the exhibit includes 16 works, with nine on loan from the Smithsonian. According to the gallery, Hidden Blackness is the first major presentation of Bannister’s work in Canada, offering a rare opportunity to explore his artistic legacy.
