The piercing quality of Laretta Houston’s fashion pictorial “Ink Pin” for Schön! magazine has more to do with approach rather than the fact that the primary visual component in them is safety pins. The inky black and milky white photos (which are literally since the model is coated with black make up and sits inside a tub of milk) are a cosmetic mash up of tribal African, ancient Egyptian and 19th century blackface reference; Houston uses the pins to securely fasten those elements in an imaginative and modern way.
